UK Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC): Complete Parent & Teacher Guide
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory digital assessment administered every June to Year 4 pupils (aged 8 to 9) in state-funded primary schools across England. Its primary purpose is to verify whether pupils can recall their multiplication tables up to 12 × 12 with speed and automaticity before entering Key Stage 3.
Format of the Real Exam: Pupils sit at a computer, laptop, or tablet. They are presented with 25 multiplication questions one at a time. For each question, pupils have exactly 6 seconds to type their answer (using either the on-screen keypad or a physical keyboard) and press Enter. Once the 6 seconds expire, the question vanishes, followed by a 3-second gap before the next item.
Why 6 Seconds? Research indicates that 6 seconds is the exact boundary between true neurological recall (automatic retrieval) and slow mechanical finger counting or repeated addition. If a child takes longer than six seconds, they are almost certainly calculating the answer from scratch rather than retrieving it automatically.
Content Weighting: The Standards and Testing Agency (STA) guidelines dictate that questions are not distributed evenly across all tables. The assessment framework explicitly gives greater weight to the 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12 times tables, as these represent the core mathematical bottlenecks for primary pupils.
How to Prepare Without Stress: The secret is gentle desensitization to the timer. Using our free online MTC Practice Simulator, pupils can experience the authentic 6-second timer in a low-stakes, supportive environment. Our simulator tracks missed facts and provides one-click targeted drills to turn hesitant answers into rapid-fire triumphs.
